For the first time ever, Etulipa’s Electro Wetting Displays are being used in a solar-powered Real-Time-Passenger-Information sign in New York City.

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) together with Telia IoT Edge, Traffic Systems Incorporated, and Daktronics has installed a new solar-powered Real-Time-Passenger-Information (RTPI) at Queens Boulevard. The new displays use ultra-low-power Etulipa Electro Wetting E-Paper Technology from Daktronics that can run on solar power, completely independent of the grid.

Etulipa’s Electro Wetting Displays (EWD) are so low power, they can work completely off-grid using just a solar panel and a battery. Solar signage offers both environmental and costs advantages for cities. Because they don’t require heavy machinery for excavation to run power cable under the sidewalk, they are cheaper, faster, and cleaner to install.

EWD technology has been specially developed for outdoor use. The EWD displays are solar-resistant and their operating temperature is – 30°C  to +60°C.
